Today QNAP Systems, Inc. released a new 16-bay NAS aimed at the SMB market, the TS-1635. This new NAS supports up to 12 3.5” drives and 4 2.5” SSDs. On top of this, the TS-1635 also comes with two 10Gbe ports and two Gigabit ports helping companies meet the demands of next-generation networks. QNAP states that all of this comes in a cost-effective NAS, though there doesn’t appear to be a price listed at the moment.

The TS-1635 comes with an Annapurna Labs Alpine AL-514 quad-core 1.7 GHz ARM Cortex-A15 processor by Amazon. The new NAS has also up to 16GB (2 x 8GB) of memory in either 4GB/8GB DDR3 RAM configuration. With this hardware, QNAP claims that the TS-1635 can hit up to 700MB/s of throughput. Another method for the TS-1635 to provide high performance is through the dedicated SSD bays that can be used as cache as well as the two 10GbE SFP+ ports, delivering speeds as high as 1228MB/s read and 874MB/s write.

From a capacity stand point, not only does the TS-1635 come with 16 bays users can add more capacity with up to two QNAP expansion enclosures (UX-800P / UX-500P). On top of physical capacity, user can leverage VJBOD (Virtual JBOD) to create virtual pools and volumes on the NAS. This would make the TS-1635 a good choice for surveillance. Users can utilize Surveillance Station to deploy a professional network surveillance Video Management System (VMS) center. And up to 40 IP camera channels could be used (8 free with the NAS).

Another potential use case for the new NAS would be deploying a secure private cloud. QNAP NAS devices support cross-platform file sharing for Windows, Mac, and Linux/UNIX making it good for centralized storage. The Hybrid Backup Sync app integrates backup, restoration and synchronization functions enabling users to synchronize their backup tasks to other QNAP NAS, remote servers and cloud storage.
