Enterprise data replication (EDR) is the process of copying or moving enterprise data from one storage system to another.

EDR began as database replication, when it involved moving a set of data from one database to another database of the same kind. In contrast, EDR tools work with multiple sources of data and types of databases in a heterogeneous environment. Data may be replicated in real-time, sporadically, or on a regularly-scheduled basis.

An EDR tool can copy data from one system to another for mutual replication. The data may be made available both as tables and XML feeds, which can make data available for real time purposes.

EDR is sometimes confused with ETL (extract, transform, load) or data federation tools. However, both those types of tools involve making changes to the set of data. Enterprise data replication tools don’t alter the data in any way but simply copy (replicate) it.
